Can anyone help settle an arguement for me? I was born in Porishead, which was then in the County of Avon, in 1996 this changed and become North Somerset County. What did central Bristol become? Having searched it appears to be gloucestershire but some how I don't think it's right.. Currently in the middle east therefore can't find any easy answer. Thanks

Bristol is once again a county in it's own right. The proper name for it is a "Unitary Authority" - which doesn't sound to good - The City and Unitary Authority of Bristol? This comes from www.swuklink.com/BAAAGEDZ.phpUntil 1373 Bristol adminstered from both Somerset and Gloucestershire. Then we were made a county. In 1974 we were part of the County of Avon. In 1992, Avon was split into Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset (BANES). Ray
