One of our ancestors was granted Freedom of the Port of Bristol in the late 1800s. He is only known to us as Captain Phillips and he was the Captain of a Packet Boat Ship. We believe he lived in Clifton. He was born around 1860 so I think this was granted to him around 1885-1895. Any ideas to help us trace this? thanks Stuart

I believe i have heard of this because my granfarther was awarded freedom of the port for recovering a lady from the upper class from the river Avon around 1940 and it was mentioned at the time that only a few people held the honour (passed down in family stories never met my grandfather), a good source to locate the information required might be to start at the SS greatbritian exibit, they have all kinds of information on that subject if related to naval happenings!! ...
